Micromobility Products: Tips for Preventing Injuries

Electronic scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards, also referred to as micromobility devices, have become common for commuting and recreation. While these devices can be fun, they can also be dangerous.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that emergency room-treated injuries and deaths related to use of these items is increasing. Additionally, proper battery maintenance and storage are crucial. There have been many product recalls related to batteries.

Understanding how to avoid common hazards related to e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards can help you and your family stay safe.

Prevent Micromobility Device Fires

Only use micromobility devices that were designed, manufactured, and certified for compliance with the applicable safety standards. Follow manufacturer directions for charging your device and unplug it when charged.

Only use the charger provided by the manufacturer. Be present when charging micromobility devices and don’t allow them to charge while you’re asleep.

If you need to replace the battery pack, make sure it’s approved by the manufacturer. Don’t use a device with a battery pack that was modified or reworked by an unqualified technician.

Lithium batteries cannot be thrown into the trash or general recycling. They must be taken to a battery recycling facility or hazardous waste collection center.

Avoid Collisions and Control Issues

Wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet when riding an e-scooter, e-bike, or hoverboard for protection. Always inspect the micromobility device before riding: check the handlebars, brakes, throttle, bells, lights, tires, cables, and/or frame for any damage before starting the device. Brake problems were a common hazard for e-scooters in CPSC’s investigation, so pay special attention to their maintenance.

Stay visible! Wear bright or reflective clothing and use your bell or horn to alert others to your presence. Avoid abrupt or unpredictable movements. Assume that drivers and pedestrians will not see you. Slow down and stay aware of surroundings.

Look out for obstacles. Keep your hands on the handlebars of your e-bike or e-scooter. Don’t carry items on the handlebars. Slow down and lean back when riding over bumps or uneven terrain.

Don’t ride micromobility devices under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Follow all manufacturer instructions and only allow one person to ride at a time.
