A relaxing day at the beach can quickly take a turn when the wind picks up, making the water unpredictable and flying debris a real possibility. Beach umbrellas are a popular accessory used for shade and sun protection, but it’s important to ensure that they are anchored properly to help prevent injuries.
Beach umbrellas have caused deaths and serious impalement injuries. Most people assume the biggest beach risks are sunburn, riptides, or jellyfish, not lawn furniture turning into a projectile in the wind.
New Voluntary Safety Standard
When a gust of wind catches an unanchored or under-anchored umbrella, it becomes airborne. At the wrong angle the umbrella pole or finial acts like a javelin. That’s why the U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) has set a new voluntary safety standard ASTM F3681-24 for beach umbrellas.
This standard requires compliant beach umbrellas/anchor systems to provide a resisting force of at least 75 pounds or stay secure in winds up to 30 miles per hour while the compliant anchor is installed in the ground.
Safety Tips for Renting or Buying Beach Umbrellas
If you’re planning to buy or rent a beach umbrella, check for anchor labels stating that the product meets ASTM F3681 for wind speeds up to 30 mph. Always follow manufacturer setup instructions carefully. Check to make sure the anchor isn’t damaged and is working as described before each use.
When using a beach umbrella, stay alert for sudden wind gusts. Close the canopy immediately if the umbrella becomes unstable.
Who’s at Fault for Beach Umbrella Injuries?
It depends on when and where the injury occurred. If a rental company supplied non-compliant equipment, it may be considered premises liability. If the umbrella and/or anchor were defective, product liability could apply. And if a neighboring beachgoer set up carelessly, it may be negligence.
