Bike Safer: Tips for Cyclists

Bicycling is a great form of exercise. It can also be a good way to commute or sightsee while reducing your carbon footprint. May is National Bike Month, and we’re celebrating the joys of cycling by sharing some key safety tips.

Bicycling Hazards

Bicycle-related deaths and injuries are more common in warmer months, remaining high through October, according to the National Safety Council. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that an estimated 52,887 bicyclists were injured in traffic crashes in 2024.

In short, cyclists face many hazards, and with approximately 80 million bicyclists sharing the road with motorized vehicles, it’s important for everyone to take precautions to improve safety.

The National Safety Council recommends that drivers reach for the door handle with their far hand when exiting their vehicle. This forces them to check the side mirror and over their left shoulder to spot any bicyclists, pedestrians, or vehicles approaching. This is a great move to use on streets, sidewalks, and parking lots.

Check Your Bike for Safety

Inspecting your bike regularly can help you stay safer on the road. Make sure the seat is at the correct height and locked in place. Check the tire inflation and make sure all parts are secure and working as expected. You can add reflectors on the rear and front of the bike as well as pedals and spokes to increase your visibility. The National Safety Council also recommends a horn or bell, rear-view mirror, and a bright headlight.

Dress for Safety

Make sure to wear bright clothing during the day and try to ride during the day when possible. If you need to ride at night, wear reflective clothing and use flashing lights. Always wear a helmet that has been certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Enjoy the Ride

Always follow local traffic laws and ride single-file in the direction of traffic. Stay alert and be on the lookout for hazards such as opening car doors, especially in busy areas. Never hitch onto cars. Stop and look left, right, and left again and over your shoulder before entering traffic. Use extra care at intersections and hand signals when turning.
