Infant Suffocation Risk: Boppy Company Recalls Over 3 Million Units

The Boppy Company and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced a recall for Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers.

Boppy Recall

There have been eight reports of infant fatalities associated with the Boppy Company Newborn Lounger. These infant deaths occurred between December 2015 and June 2020. The infants were placed on their back, side, or stomach on the lounger and were found on their side or stomach.

Infants are at risk for suffocation if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs their breathing. Infants may also roll off the lounger onto a surface that obstructs breathing, such as soft bedding.

This recall affects about 3.3 million units which were sold at Target, Walmart, Pottery Barn Kids, Amazon.com, and other stores. The loungers were sold from January 2004 through September 2021.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the Boppy Newborn Loungers. Contact The Boppy Company for a refund by calling 800-416-1355 or through its website.

Safe Sleep Tips for Infants

Parents and caregivers should know and follow safe sleeping practices for infants. Loungers and items like pillows are not safe for infant sleep due to suffocation risk.

CPSC continues to emphasize that babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard. Do not add pillows, padded crib bumpers, blankets, stuffed toys, or other items to a baby’s sleeping area. Make sure to always place babies to sleep on their backs.
