Splashing and swimming in the pool is a great way to cool off on a hot summer day, but it’s important to keep pool safety in mind. Water safety guidelines can help you and your loved ones enjoy the pool safely.
Child Drownings
According to the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC), 380 children fatally drowned in 2021. Those who are five years old and younger are particularly vulnerable; this age group represents 75% of child drowning deaths and 77% of nonfatal injuries.
Parents and caregivers can prevent these tragedies by following water safety guidelines. Child drowning often occur in residential settings. Using safety devices like barriers, fences, pool covers, and alarms can provide layers of protection to help prevent drowning. Suction entrapment can be prevented by using drain covers that meet the federal safety standard. Don’t allow children to play near drains.
Pool Safety
Always supervise children in or near water. Don’t leave them unattended and designate a responsible adult to be the water watcher if you’re with a group.
Teach children how to swim or enroll them in swimming lessons to help them learn water safety and feel more confident in the water. Swimming is a life-saving skill.
Learn how to perform CPR on both children and adults. Install safety devices like barriers and alarms if you own a pool. Make sure all pools and spas have compliant drain covers. Take the Pool Safely Pledge!
