Safety Tips for Trick or Treating

Trick or treat is a tradition that many families look forward to. Following a few basic safety tips will help ensure that everyone has a safe and fun Halloween!

Tips for Trick or Treating Safely

Cross the street at corners and use traffic signals and crosswalks where available. Be sure to look left, right, and left again when crossing. Don’t get distracted by your phone or other electronic devices. Always use the sidewalk or path. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Be on the lookout for vehicles that are turning or backing up.

Make sure costumes are correctly sized to help prevent kids from tripping and falling. Add reflective tape or stickers to costumes or bags to help increase visibility. Carrying glow sticks or flashlights can also help children see and be seen by drivers. Choose light colors for costumes when possible. Masks can make it difficult to see, so use face paint and makeup when possible.

Driving Safely

If you’re driving during trick or treating hours, be especially alert and slow down in residential areas. Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully. Avoid any distractions in your vehicle. Turn your headlights on early to help you spot children from farther away and to help them see you.

Stay safe and have fun trick or treating!
