May is Older Americans Month, and this year the theme is Champion Your Health. This month raises awareness for healthy aging to help individuals make informed choices to support their independence.
Prevention and Wellness for Seniors
Getting regular checkups is one of the most important ways to manage your health. Talk to your doctor about any screenings you may need and how often to get them. Bring questions and details about any recent health changes or symptoms to your appointments. It’s a good idea to take notes or bring someone along to help you write down what the doctor recommends.
Regular exercise helps improve or maintain your cardiovascular function, strength, flexibility, and balance. This can reduce your risk of falls and support your long-term health and aging in place. If you need support, talk to your doctor about physical therapy. Many seniors find that a mobility aid like a cane, walker, or power chair can make it easier to get out of the house and stay engaged.
Mental wellbeing is crucial for older adults. Loneliness and social isolation can lead to anxiety and depression. Staying involved in the community, favorite hobbies, family events, volunteering, and other activities can help support mental wellbeing and reduce loneliness.
Fall Prevention
Falls become more likely as you age, due to physical changes and health conditions. Certain medications can also increase your risk of falling. Falls are a leading cause of injury among seniors, but having fall prevention strategies such as the following recommend by the Mayo Clinic in place can help reduce your risk.
Start by talking to your doctor about your fall risk. You’ll want to discuss your current medications and supplements, any previous falls you’ve experienced, and your health conditions. Staying physically active with activities like walking or water workouts can help with fall prevention. Talk to your doctor about any exercise you’re considering adding to your routine and let them know if you’re avoiding physical activity due to fear of falling.
Reconsider your footwear. Avoid unstructured slippers and shoes with slick soles. Look for sturdy shoes with nonskid soles that fit properly. Not sure where to start? Many shoe stores can measure your feet and advise you on models that may suit your lifestyle.
Make sure your living space has adequate lighting and plenty of room to move around in high-traffic areas. Remove clutter from walkways and secure or remove any loose rugs. Repair any flooring issues, like loose floorboards, right away. Use nonslip mats in the bathtub or shower. Consider a bath seat and toilet seat or grab bars to add more stability in the bathroom.
