The risk of falling – and related health concerns – increases as we age. Making simple changes to your home can help prevent falls. According to the National Council on Aging, more than half of falls take place at home, so it’s well worth taking the time to update your space.
Improve Lighting
Using brighter bulbs makes it easier to see and avoid obstacles. Adding additional lighting such as night lights can reduce fall risk, especially in high traffic areas such as hallways and bathrooms. Motion-sensor lights can be useful at night and in small spaces such as closets. Additional lighting in the kitchen can help prevent cooking injuries, while task-specific lighting can make hobbies such as needlepoint and reading more enjoyable.
Make sure light switches are accessible. Illuminated switches can be particularly helpful at night. It should be easy to turn on lights from bed or at the top and bottom of stairs. Voice-activated technology can also be used to make lighting easier to use.
Flooring Considerations
Reduce clutter and ensure you have plenty of space to navigate your home. Obstacles such as loose throw rugs should be removed or secured with non-slip backing or double-sided tape. Rearrange furniture to ensure clear pathways. Secure any cords or wires against the wall to prevent tripping.
Repair any loose floorboards or carpeting so your flooring has a flat and even surface. Use non-slip mats or strips in bathtubs, showers, and hard floors that are prone to getting wet, such as bathroom floors.
Add sturdy handrails on both sides of staircases for additional support. These should run the full length of the stairs.
Store Items Within Easy Reach
If you’ve ever stumbled while stepping down from a ladder or stool, you know just how easy it can be to lose your balance. Keep items that are used often at waist level or within easy reach. Use a “reach stick” to pick up an items that is too high, or ask for help. Never stand on a chair or table to try to reach something. If you use a step stool, ensure that it’s steady and has a handrail on top.
Bathroom Safety
Add grab bars near the toilet as well as inside and outside the shower or tub. Consider using a shower chair for more stability when washing. A raised toilet seat or a seat with armrests can make it easier to sit and stand.
These and other home modifications can help you prevent falls at home. Check out the room-by-room guide from the National Institute on Aging for additional information.
