Is Another Airbag Recall on the Horizon?

Airbag inflators continue to make the news as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) calls for an immediate recall of 67 million airbag inflators.

The inflators in question have a dangerous defect and the NHTSA cited at least nine incidents of airbags rupturing, leading to major injuries and deaths beginning in 2009. Seven of those incidents occurred in the United States. The airbag inflators were produced in the 18 years prior to January 2018.

ARC Automotive manufactured the airbags. The company installed equipment to help inspect airbag inflators in 2018. ARC disagrees with the recall request, stating that extensive field testing has not found an inherent defect. ARC has worked with the NHTSA for nearly eight years to investigate ruptured airbag inflators, including tests on 918 inflators.

GM has recalled approximately one million vehicles since three of the vehicles impacted by the defective airbag inflators were Chevrolet Traverses. The Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles from 2014-2017 model years are included in that recall.

Takata Airbag Recall Continues

Millions of vehicles with airbags manufactured by Takata have been recalled. BMW recently issued a “Do Not Drive” warning for vehicles built between 2000-2006 that are already under recall for a defective Takata airbag. Replacement parts are available for free. Honda, GM, Toyota, Infiniti, and many other car manufacturers also have open recalls and/or “Do Not Drive” warnings for vehicles that have Takata airbags.

Takata airbags caused at least 18 fatalities and more than 400 driver injuries. The Takata recall is the largest auto recall ever.
