Prevent Workplace Falls

According to the National Safety Council, the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death is falls. In 2020, more than 42,000 individuals died due to falls at home and at work.

Leading Cause of Workplace Injury

For some working adults, falls can be the leading cause of death at the workplace, depending on the industry. In the same year, more than 800 workers died in falls, while 211, 640 were injured severely enough to require time off work.

Construction workers are at the highest risk for fatal falls at a rate that is seven times higher than other industries. But falls can happen in any workplace, and they don’t have to occur from a high level to inflict serious injuries or even death.

Prevention is Key

Falls are preventable. Having proper safety equipment and clearly marking hazardous areas (such as wet floors) can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe in your workplace. Clean up any spills immediately and keep the work area clear of hazards.

If you’re working from a ladder, roof, or scaffolding, always take time to plan, assess risks, and use the correct equipment. Determine what safety equipment is needed and check the work area for potential hazards before getting started. Avoid working in inclement weather when working outdoors. Always keep two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand on the ladder.

Securely fasten straight and extension ladders to an upper support. Wear shoes that are designed to be slip resistant. Don’t use equipment that is damaged.

At home and at the office, floors and surfaces should remain clutter free. File cabinets and desk drawers should be closed. Keep electrical cords out of traffic areas and install handrails on stairways. Maintain good lighting both indoors and outdoors.
