Windows are one of the top hidden hazards in the home. SafeKids Worldwide reports that falling out of windows results in an average of 3,300 injuries and 8 fatalities in children age 5 and younger each year.
Window Safety Week raises awareness of the safety hazards presented by windows and how to prevent accidental window falls.
Tips to Prevent Window Falls
The Window Safety Task Force offers recommendations and safety tips for preventing window falls, including:
- Windows should be closed and locked when children are present. If you need ventilation, open windows that are out of reach of children.
- Place furniture away from windows to prevent climbing.
- Install ASTM F2090-compliant window guards or limiting devices.
- Monitor children near windows, patio doors, and balconies.
- Teach kids how to use windows safely in case of an emergency.
- Insect screens are meant to keep bugs out, not to keep children in. Don’t rely on them to prevent a fall.
- Only use cordless window coverings or window coverings with inaccessible cords in home with young children.
Using Windows in an Emergency
Most residential building codes require bedrooms to have a secondary means of escape in case of fire or smoke. The secondary exit is often a window. Windows need to be safe and accessible in case of emergency.
Create a home fire escape plan and practice opening and closing windows that may be used as emergency exits. If you’re remodeling, make sure you know emergency escape and rescue building codes. If you use window guards or fall-prevention devices on your windows, make sure they comply with ASTM F2090, which means they use quick release mechanisms.
Window Safety Week
Window Safety Week is held during the first full week of April. It’s a great reminder to review your home safety measures.
