National Safety Month

dishesJune is National Safety Month! This is a great time to evaluate your home, property, vehicles, and safety equipment for any improvements or updates needed.

According to KidsHealth.org, more than one third of child injuries and fatalities occur at home. Taking the time to perform any necessary maintenance, check for recalls, and educate children in your home about potential safety hazards can help prevent household accidents.

Children are especially vulnerable to potential injuries, making it very important to make sure their safety equipment is properly fitted. From car seats to bicycle helmets to life jackets, improper use of safety devices can cause them to be less effective or even dangerous. National Safety Month is an easy reminder to make sure that the safety equipment your family relies on is in good repair.

Make sure that bicycles and tricycles are well maintained and properly sized for your children or grandchildren. If you have a backyard swing set, take a look and make sure that it has not been damaged. Splinters, loose bolts, and other hazards can cause injuries.

Talk about fire exit strategies, what you will do in the event of a tornado or severe storm, and how to reach emergency services if necessary. If your child doesn’t know how to swim, enroll them in swimming lessons and teach them to stay away from pools, ponds, hot tubs, and other bodies of water when unsupervised. If you have guns in your home, keep them out of reach and teach children proper gun safety techniques.

Keep household chemicals out of reach of children and teach them not to ingest unknown substances such as plants they find outdoors. Put safety locks and latches on cabinets and drawers to prevent young children from getting into cleaners and other potentially hazardous materials. Use outlet covers to prevent curious fingers from touching electrical outlets.

For your own peace of mind, it’s a good idea to take a basic first aid course that includes CPR and Heimlich maneuver instruction.
