Cribs, High Chairs, and Carriers: What New CPSC Data Reveals About Nursery Product Safety

Tens of thousands of babies and toddlers are injured by everyday nursery products each year. The products responsible for the most injuries aren’t always the ones parents and caregivers worry about.

According to a 2025 U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) report, an estimated 70,000 injuries among children under 5 treated in emergency rooms in 2024 were from nursery products.

Top Nursery Product Hazards for Babies and Toddlers

The main hazard categories are high chairs, cribs/mattresses, infant carriers, and strollers/ carriages. Together, these products account for 62% of the reported injuries. The leading reason for injuries was falling. The head was the most frequently injured body part.

Sleep Products: The Real Danger Zone

CPSC received reports of 537 deaths from 2020-2022 with cribs/mattress, bassinets/cradles, playpens/play yards, infant carriers, and baby bouncer seats accounting for 76% of fatalities. Many of these deaths were tied to unsafe sleep environments such as extra bedding and soft items. However, a meaningful share involved product failure including incomplete assembly, missing/broken parts, or use of recalled or secondhand products.

Whether a death is considered a tragic accident or potential product liability claim often comes down to whether the product itself failed, was defectively designed, lacked adequate warnings, or was under an active recall the manufacturer/retailer failed to flag.

Practical Safety Guidance for Parents

  • Keep sleep surfaces bare – no extra blankets, pillows, bumpers, toys, etc.
  • Register new baby products right away so you’re directly notified of any recalls
  • Inspect assembly and hardware regularly
  • Check CPSC.gov for recalls before using any secondhand nursery item

If a nursery product failed or a recalled product caused injury, save the item and packaging and contact an attorney to discuss whether to pursue a claim.
