School Safety Tips to Teach Your Kids

This time of year is a reminder that there’s so much to learn in and out of the classroom! Teaching your kids these safety tips recommended by the American Red Cross can help make this year safe and fun for everyone.

What to Teach Younger Students

If your student is younger or heading to school for the first time, make sure they know:

  • Your phone number
  • Your address
  • How to contact parents at work
  • How to contact another trusted adult
  • How (and when) to dial 911
  • Not to talk to strangers or accept rides from someone they don’t know

Student Pedestrians

Students who walk to school need to learn to walk on the sidewalk. If there’s no sidewalk available, teach them to walk facing traffic. Stop at intersections and look left, right, and left again to check for vehicles approaching. Cross the street at the corner. Obey traffic signals and stay in the crosswalk. Don’t run out into the street or cross between parked vehicles.

Bus Riders

Students who ride the bus to school should learn to get to the bus stop early and stay back from the curb while waiting for the bus. Wait to board the bus after it comes to a complete stop and the driver instructs them to board. Stay in clear view of the bus driver. Never walk behind the bus.

Car Riders

Make sure your child always wears a seatbelt. Younger children need to use car seats or booster seats until the lap-shoulder belt fits properly. They should ride in the back seat until they’re at least 13 years old.

Teach teens driving to school to stay alert for buses, pedestrians, and other vehicles. Wear seat belts and avoid distractions while driving.
