Tips for Summer Road Trips

file000850198887Are you planning a vacation? Like many families, you may be planning to take a road trip or two this summer. Since no one really wants to bond over a flat tire or run out of gas on the side of the highway in the blazing hot sun, we’re sharing some tips to keep your vehicle in good working order before you hit the highway.

Have you been maintaining your car properly? When is the last time you checked the tire pressure? Are you due for an oil change? Is it time to replace your windshield wiper blades? When did you last have your tires rotated? As you prepare for your trip, it’s important to make sure that your car is ready for the journey. It’s better to take care of any minor issues (such as replacing a fading headlight) before you travel to help make the miles pass as smoothly as possible.

Even if you take great care of your car, you could experience a breakdown or be stuck in traffic for hours due to an accident. Stash an emergency roadside kit in your vehicle in case of emergency—yours or someone else’s. Some items to consider including are: first aid kit, water, jumper cables, flares, and a first aid kit.

While driving, stay alert! Long days of driving can lead to distracted driving. If you are tired, stop driving, even if it’s just to walk around at a rest stop until you feel refreshed and ready to go again. Consider building a night at a hotel into your journey to and from your destination to break up the drive if needed. Keep an eye out for motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians while driving.

Plan and prepare entertainment for your road trip in advance to prevent the chorus of “are we there yet?” Find an audiobook or podcast that the whole family will enjoy to keep the travel doldrums at bay. Bring along fun age-appropriate toys or activities for the kids. Pack healthy snacks to prevent tummy rumblings. Summer road trips are part of the fun, so don’t forget to plan for that as part of your vacation planning.

Stay safe out there and enjoy your summer travels!
