Think Safety This June

58904ed68eaa02602897e34a0c4f9d2bThe National Safety Council has designated June as National Safety Month. It’s a great reminder to reevaluate safety practices in your home, office, and on the road. The National Safety Council recommends that individuals take the time to do at least one thing to improve their safety this June. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Check batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Get brakes and tires inspected for your automobiles.
  • Install a safety fence around your outdoor pool.
  • Take a CPR or first aid course.
  • Wear your seat belt.
  • Install railings or non-slip surfaces to help prevent falls.
  • Make sure dressers, desks, entertainment centers, and other heavy furniture is secured to avoid tip overs.
  • Avoid driving when you’re drowsy.
  • Inspect electrical wiring and cords at your home and office for wear and tear; have damaged items replaced.
  • Ensure that everyone in your home and office knows what to do in the event of a fire, tornado, or other disaster.
  • Build an emergency kit or update supplies in a kit you’ve already created.
  • Don’t use your cell phone while driving.
  • Wear safety gear such as a lifejacket or helmet when appropriate.
  • Store medications and cleaning supplies out of the reach of children.
  • Make sure your child’s car seat is the correct size.
  • Check safety ratings for toys, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Don’t drink and drive.
  • Learn stroke warning signs.
  • Manage your stress levels.
  • Make sure your houseplants are nontoxic.
  • Install nightlights to prevent bumps in the night.
  • Keep high traffic areas in your home and office clear of clutter.
  • Schedule checkups.
