Be Prepared for Winter Storms

Snowstorms and winter weather can create tough conditions. Are your home and vehicle prepared for snow? Read on to learn how to prepare.

Weatherproof Your Home

Are there water lines running along exterior walls in your home? If so, be sure to insulate the lines to help prevent them from freezing. You can stay warmer and reduce your energy bill by sealing doors and windows with caulk and/or weather-strips where appropriate.

Installing storm or thermal-pane windows, or covering your windows with plastic from the inside, can also help your home retain heat. If you use a fireplace or wood stove for emergency heating, make sure to get your chimney or flue inspected on an annual basis.

Test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector monthly. Keep a dry-chemical fire extinguisher near your emergency heat source. Keep a thermometer inside to check the temperature of your home.

If the temperature gets extreme and you have outdoor pets, bring them indoors if possible. If you can’t bring them inside, make sure they have adequate shelter and access to water that is not frozen.

Vehicle Emergency Kit

If you happen to find yourself on the road during a major winter weather event, you’ll be glad to have an emergency kit in your vehicle. Here are a few recommendations for items to include:

  • Tow chains/rope
  • Tire chains
  • Portable charger for cell phone
  • Windshield scraper
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Water and snack food
  • First aid kit
  • Shovel
  • Booster cables with fully charged battery or jumper cables
  • Emergency flares or reflectors

Keep your vehicle well-maintained. Make sure your tires have adequate tread and air pressure. Keep the gas tank near full to prevent ice from forming in the tank and fuel lines.
