July is peak motorcycle riding (and peak fatal-crash) season in Indiana. According to the Indiana Crash Facts 2024 report, there were 136 motorcyclist fatalities in Indiana in 2024. Although motorcycles made up under 2% of vehicles involved in Indiana collisions in 2024, they account for 136 of the 872 total traffic deaths.

Helmets Save Lives
Indiana law requires helmets only for operators and passengers younger than 18 as well as for operators with a motorcycle learner’s permit. In 2024, only 37% of motorcyclists involved in collisions were wearing helmets; among motorcyclists killed in crashes, the number dropped to just 31%. Wearing a helmet doesn’t make you invincible, but it’s statistically far more dangerous not to wear a helmet.
Don’t Drive Impaired
Among motorcycle and passenger vehicle drives in 2024 fatal crashes who were tested for blood alcohol content, motorcycle operators had the highest rate of alcohol impairment of any vehicle type at 20.9%. Driving while intoxicated is dangerous for everyone. Don’t drink and drive.
Summer Collisions
Fatal collisions in Indiana occurred most often in May, June, and August. Nighttime fatal collisions were highest in June and July. The exact season you’re reading this is statistically the most dangerous time to ride. Always be aware of your surroundings and dress for visibility. Increase your following distance and proceed with caution when making left turns at intersections.
