Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter

Winter DriveIs your car ready for winter weather? Ice, snow, sleet, and other winter weather conditions can cause unsafe driving conditions, so it’s important to make sure your vehicle is well maintained.

Start the season by visiting your mechanic for routine maintenance. Ask your mechanic to check for leaks, worn houses, and any necessary repairs or replacements. Make sure your tires and brakes are prepared for winter. Check to be sure your vehicle’s battery is up to the challenges of winter.

Are all of the lights on your vehicle working properly? Check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and emergency flashers.

Check your windshield wipers and fill your vehicle’s windshield washer fluid reservoir. Opt for the windshield wiper fluid that includes de-icer. Replace wiper blades if they are worn. This small investment can significantly improve your ability to see the road during a winter storm.

Stock your vehicle with the following items:

  • Snow shovel, ice scraper
  • Jumper cables
  • Sand or kitty litter to provide traction if your vehicle becomes stuck
  • Flashlight
  • Flares and emergency markers
  • Blankets
  • Water and non-perishable food
  • Cell phone and charger

Before getting on the road this winter, take a moment to check the weather and road conditions. Be sure to allow plenty of time to get to your destination; leave early if necessary. If you typically reply on a GPS system to get you to new places, check the directions and maps before getting in the vehicle. If you can, avoid driving if road conditions are hazardous. Keep your gas tank close to full in case of unexpected delays.

When driving in winter weather, obey posted speed limits. Drive even slower if conditions make it necessary. Increase your following distance to be sure you’ll have plenty of time to stop behind the vehicles ahead of you.
